It is currently home to over 420 species of aquatic animals and plants, including species native only to the Hawaiian Islands. It is located next to the Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium and The New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel.

Only a few minutes walk from the hotel, the Honolulu Zoo is located on a 42 acre site on the North End of Kapiolani Park. The Honolulu Zoo has the distinction of being "the only zoo in the United States originating from a King's grant of royal lands to the people".
